Summer Band Lessons
Summer Band lessons are in August. Use the link to access the registration form. Turn in money and the form to the Main Office.
School supplies for Band:
The school can no longer provide basic band supplies in the band office. You MUST have reeds, oil, swabs, etc., for your instrument to work properly.
If you need to buy supplies for the beginning of school, click below for suggestions for most instruments. (There is no information for percussion, but they will have an instrument use fee to use all the school's percussion equipment.)

Band expectations
Senior high and junior high band students have band every day during the school day. Students have plenty of time to make it to the band room within the four-minute passing time between classes. Students need to be in the room, getting their instruments and music ready when the bell rings.
Students will all participate in the ensemble warm-ups and music selections that are posted on the board in the band room. At the end of class, all students will put instruments back in cases and put cases and music away.
Cell phones are only allowed after instruments are put away, or if allowed by the teacher.

Attendance, assignments, & grading
Class attendance is very important, because we can never fully duplicate a rehearsal. Students are expected to know their parts so during class we can work on the music as an ensemble.
I will use Synergy gradebook for all grades. Students are graded on the following scale:
In class work with all materials: 60% of quarter grade
Performances/Concerts: 20% 6th, JR & SR
Scale Tests: 5% 6th & JR, 10% SR
Worksheets: 5% 6th & JR, 10% SR
Pep Band Attendance: 10% SR only
In class work is where students are graded on their contributions during class. Students typically lose daily points because they are not prepared for class (pencil, music, instrument) or they are talking or making other unnecessary noises during class. Excessive disruptions will cause a student's grade to drop quickly.
Junior High Band has quarterly scale tests. Both senior high and junior high will have worksheets throughout the school year.

Concert and Pep Band attendance
Concert attendance is required and 20% of your band grade. If you miss a concert, your quarter grade will drop TWO letter grades. If it is a planned absence or illness, there will be a makeup assignment available.
Concert attendance is more important than a grade. When a student is part of an ensemble, their absence changes the ensemble, and influences all their peers. Please plan so you can take part in every concert.
Since band is a MSHSL co-curricular activity, there will be performances outside the school day. This relates to contests, honor festivals and pep band.
Contest participation is required for large group contest, and is recommended for solo and ensemble contests. Students need to be academically eligible to participate in all contests.
Pep Band attendance is required at scheduled events. (This could be our largest audience, so we want to sound our best.) Excused absences are at the discretion of the director. Communication is key, so the band can be prepared for any absences. Typically, an excused absence would include: illness, playing on the varsity team, away school games, prearranged family trips, or emergencies. Situations related to rides or work are decided with the director. Typical unexcused absences include: skipping without notice, continual pep band absences, non-school activities, and JV players not joining the band.

Band lessons
Band lessons are available to students working on solos, auditions, and ensemble contest music. Lessons are during school, and can be scheduled as needed before and after school. A student could earn extra credit by scheduling a lesson during the quarter.
Success at solo and ensemble contest can only happen if a student practices their part outside of class and between scheduled lessons.

"Don't practice until you get it right; practice until you can't get it wrong."
Concert attire
Junior and Senior High Band students wear "black 'n black" for concerts. This means they need to wear a black top and black bottoms. It can be short or long sleeved. It can be pants, dresses, or skirts. They must have black shoes. I have allowed accessories (ties, jewelry) to be colored.
Sixth grade band students need to dress nice for the concert. Black is recommended, not required.
ALL CONCERT ATTIRE MUST CONFORM TO THE SCHOOL DRESS CODE.
